Our annual event with the LMSA+, the LMSA undergraduate chapter here at USF, is coming on Sunday, October 20th from 2-6 PM. It will be hosted at MDD, which is the medical school building in Downtown Tampa (address: 560 Channelside Dr, Tampa, FL 33602, United States). From 2-5PM, we will be providing students with mentors, giving them tours, and having a panel with faculty, residents, and medical students. From 5-6 PM, we will be partnering with Horns for Healing for a fun social activity to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! More information will come in the October newsletter, but for now, we need volunteers.
Women Building Women and the Health Disparities Scholarly Concentration are coming together to help host Judeo-Christian Clinic’s Women’s Night on October 23rd from 5-8 PM. LMSA is invited to support by offering Spanish-speaking medical students to help with translation! We will have a quick Teams meeting on 10/21 at 7 PM to go over roles for the night. If you would like to participate, please sign up using this sign-up sheet (closing 10/20) and reach out to me or any contact listed for any questions! Sign up with this link
LMSA is excited to host a dinner followed by a Q&A panel featuring faculty and residents on November 20th from 6-7 PM at the downtown medical school building (560 Channelside Dr, Tampa, FL 33602). It will be in MDD Room 240 (Auditorium on 2nd Floor). This panel will offer medical students a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights into the experiences and journeys of Latino physicians. Students can submit their questions in advance and will also have the chance to ask them in person during the event. We are seeking faculty and resident volunteers to participate in the panel. If you are interested in joining us and sharing your expertise with LMSAโs medical students, please email [email protected].
Pre-Med Mentorship & Salsa Class with MCOM Diversity Council
A two part event consisting of small group mentorship between our medical student members and the undergraduate pre-med LMSA Plus members, giving them a tour of the Downtown Medical School campus and providing a medical student and faculty panel to answer their questions about applying to medical school and USF MCOM, and a Salsa class in collaboration with MCOM’s Diversity Council.
Paella, Flan, Tembleque, and More
A night of Hispanic foods and fun, hosted by our faculty leader Dr. Javier Cuevas. With delicious ingredients such as fish, chorizo, chicken, shrimp, clams, and mussels, Dr. Cuevas cooked an excellent traditional paella for attendees, with guests encouraged to bring and share their own dishes, where foods such like platanos maduros, ensalada fria de coditos, and tembleque were all contributed by LMSA memebrs and guests.
Hispanic Dishes & Faculty-Led Discussions
A time of thoughtful discussions led by our faculty panel on their experiences as Latino physicians, emphasizing the theme of “Balancing Empowerment and Challenges: the Journey of Latino Physicians”, as well as enjoying Hispanic dishes brought by members to this years potluck.
Fundraising with Delicious Hispanic Deserts
In support of future event funding and the growth of LMSA at MCOM, our students sold home-made flan, tembleque, and guava pastelitos to raise money for LMSA and spread the word about our organization.
Networking & Connecting with LMSA Faculty
A time of socializing and networking, all while enjoying Latino food and music, students and faculty had the opportunity to get to know each other with fun icebreaker activities and an all-inclusive Hispanic dinner. Our goals and outlook for growth and impact were also touched on, discussing the future of our LMSA chapter here at MCOM.
